Islanders are invited to have their electric blankets inspected by Jersey Fire and Rescue to help prevent winter fires. The inspections will take place at Western Fire Station on Thursday, October 17, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and at Fire Headquarters on Rouge Bouillon on Friday, October 18.
Any blankets that do not pass inspection will be disposed of, but those affected will receive a 10% Powerhouse voucher to help purchase a replacement.
Jersey Fire and Rescue has also shared essential safety tips for using electric blankets this winter:
Regular Inspections: Check for signs of wear, fraying, or damage before use.
Follow Manufacturer Instructions: Use, wash, and store blankets according to the manufacturer's guidelines.
Avoid Overheating: Do not leave blankets on for extended periods; turn them off before getting into bed.
No Pets or Heavy Objects: Keep pets and heavy items off the blanket to prevent damage.
Replace Old Blankets: Consider replacing any blanket older than ten years or showing signs of wear.
Watch Commander Phil Falle emphasised the risks: "Electric blankets are essentially electrical items and are the second greatest cause of property fires in the UK and Jersey. Since these appliances are used on beds and often while people sleep, regular checks are crucial."
