Students set to design and construct F1 race car

Secondary school students in Jersey are being given the chance to design, build, and race their own small-scale F1 cars through an exciting new initiative.

The program, a partnership between Digital Jersey and Skills Jersey, will bring the global F1 challenge to the Channel Islands, aiming to help students develop valuable skills in teamwork, marketing, project management, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) within an F1-themed framework.

A total of 18 student teams will construct cars powered by CO2 canisters, which will race on a custom-built track.

Digital Jersey CEO Tony Moretta expressed enthusiasm for the project, noting that it will “truly engage” local students while enhancing their skills in STEM, marketing, communication, teamwork, and project management. He also highlighted the possibility for Jersey students to compete nationally in the UK and potentially on an international stage.

Digital Jersey stated that participants will have access to computer-aided design (CAD) software and specialised equipment to help bring their ideas to life.

Jersey's student teams will first compete against each other, with the winning team advancing to the UK national finals and potentially to the world finals in 2025. Last year’s world finals, held over three days in Singapore, saw 68 teams from around the globe competing for top honours.
