As part of Democracy Week, Jersey students have been learning about local politics through visits from politicians at schools across the island.
On Thursday, a group of deputies, including Sam Mézec, David Warr, Carina Alves, and Mary Le Hegerat, visited Highlands College to engage with students. They answered questions about important issues like the future of the hospital and support for construction apprentices.
Sixteen-year-old Safia expressed the importance of youth voices in democracy, saying, “I think young people often don't get to have their say enough.” She appreciated the opportunity to learn about civic involvement and encouraged her peers to engage in the political process.
Deputy Mézec emphasised the significance of connecting with young people, noting, “Initiatives like Democracy Week create more opportunities for students to meet directly with politicians and ask tough questions.” This year marks the fifth iteration of the Democracy Week campaign, featuring various events across Jersey.
