Two additional teams have joined the Jersey FA Walking Football League, doubling its size since its inception in 2020.
Walking football, a slower version of the game where running is prohibited, is especially popular with older individuals and those with mobility challenges.
The inclusion of new teams from St Ouen FC and Madeira FC brings the league's total to 10 teams for the 2024-25 season, according to league officials. Jonathan Le Fondre, chairman of the FA’s competitions committee, expressed excitement over the league’s growth. "The addition of two more teams reflects the rising interest in this format of the game, which provides a fun and competitive way for older players, or those recovering from injury, to stay active and involved in football," he said.
The walking football league was originally launched in 2020 with just four teams participating in its first season.
The FA encourages anyone over the age of 45 interested in joining to contact a club for registration details. The 10 teams competing this season are: Portuguese Football Club, St John, St Ouen, St Peter, Trinity, First Tower, Madeira, Grouville, Rozel Rovers, and St Paul’s.
Jean-Luc Desbois, a St Paul’s player and the league coordinator, said it’s been incredible to witness the growth of walking football on the island. "We’ve seen players rekindle their love for football, and the camaraderie and banter are just as valuable as the game itself," he said. "The sense of community within the league is very strong, and we’re committed to nurturing that."
For those interested in trying walking football in a less competitive setting, the Jersey FA offers regular "just play" sessions on Tuesdays, including a women’s-only session for over-30s.
