Statistics Jersey has published the "Public Spending Statistics 2023" report, which details government spending in Jersey. The report uses the Classification of the Functions of Government (COFOG) system to categorize spending, allowing for easy comparisons with other countries and across time periods.
In Jersey, "general government" spending includes costs from government departments, non-ministerial departments, States funds, Andium Homes Limited, and the 12 Parishes.
Key Findings for 2023:
General government spending increased by 6.3% (or £97.9 million) in real terms, reaching £1,644.2 million.
The largest spending increases were in:
Health: up by £51.6 million due to hospital and outpatient services.
Public order and safety: up by £14.9 million, largely due to major incidents in the Island.
Social protection: up by £14.5 million.
Nearly three-quarters (73%) of all spending was on social protection, health, and education.
Comparison with Other Countries:
In 2022, Jersey's government spending as a proportion of GDP was lower than all OECD countries except Ireland.
Jersey allocated a higher proportion of its total spending to health compared to all OECD countries, but spent less on health as a percentage of GDP compared to some, including the UK.
