Police issue warning to islanders about phone banking scam

Islanders in Jersey are being cautioned about a sophisticated telephone scam currently affecting local residents. The States of Jersey Police have reported an increase in incidents involving fraudsters posing as representatives from legitimate banks, urging victims to make immediate transfers of large sums of money.

According to authorities, the scam involves callers falsely claiming that a member of the bank’s staff is attempting to remove money from the victim’s account. The scammers then convince the target not to trust any bank employees, warning them to refrain from contacting the bank directly. This tactic is designed to create urgency and fear, making the victim more likely to comply with the fraudulent instructions.

In a statement shared on social media, police explained the strategy used by the scammers and emphasised the importance of being vigilant. The force reiterated that no legitimate bank would ever request such a transaction over the phone.

Authorities are urging anyone who believes they have been contacted by these scammers to immediately report the incident to the police. Islanders are also being advised to remain cautious of unsolicited calls and to verify any suspicious requests directly with their bank using official contact methods.
