New speed camera may be implemented next year

The States of Jersey Police may begin using new speed camera equipment as early as January 2025, a scrutiny panel has been told.

Constable Mark Labey, a member of the Children, Education, and Home Affairs scrutiny panel, noted that 60% of complaints from Grouville parishioners were related to speeding. He pointed out limitations with the current speed traps in use.

Chief Officer Robin Smith explained that while the new camera system is costly, it is significantly more effective than the speed guns currently used by honourary police.

"We will target high-risk locations," Smith said. "With accurate data, we can properly deploy cameras in these areas, with the first deployment likely in early January 2025."
