New Hourly Wage Suggested for Carers in Jersey

Jersey ministers are considering introducing a standardised hourly rate for carers who provide in-home care services.

A Ministerial Action Plan from the Domiciliary Care Market Review highlighted inconsistencies in the rates the government pays care providers for similar services. The review also noted a projected rise in the number of elderly people needing long-term care in Jersey, a trend seen in many other countries.

Ministers have proposed a fixed hourly rate of £34.80, set to take effect from January.

The report emphasized the need for a sustainable domiciliary care system, saying, "To support individuals with long-term care needs to continue living at home within their community, Jersey needs a stable and sustainable domiciliary care market, alongside a long-term care scheme that ensures fair financial support for both care home residents and those receiving care at home."

As of mid-2024, data shows around 37,000 hours of in-home care are provided monthly at a cost of approximately £1.2 million, totaling £14.5 million annually. Current rates for domiciliary care range from £28 to £37.70 per hour.
