The Jersey government’s failure to select a ferry operator after ten months has been labelled “deeply embarrassing” by political commentator John Henwood. While Guernsey recently announced its choice of Brittany Ferries, Jersey has yet to finalise its decision.
Deputy Kirsten Morel, Jersey’s Economic Development Minister, stated he still has questions for two bidders but expects a decision within days. The tender process, conducted alongside Guernsey, aimed to determine whether Condor Ferries would retain its contract or if another company would take over next March.
Henwood criticised Jersey's handling of the situation, asserting that the prolonged decision-making reflects poorly on the government. Morel acknowledged that having different ferry operators for the islands is a possibility, but emphasised the need to gather all necessary information before proceeding.
Former Condor manager Steve Bailey expressed frustration over Jersey's delays, while a local tourism group described the idea of two ferry companies as “unworkable.” Businesses have called for clarity regarding future ferry services, as Condor Ferries has been serving the Channel Islands for 60 years.
