Jersey to Debate Potential Ban on Disposable Vapes

A proposal to ban the sale and supply of disposable vapes in Jersey could make it a criminal offense to distribute these products by April 2025, if approved.

Government ministers are pushing to amend existing single-use plastic legislation to include disposable e-cigarettes, citing environmental and health concerns. Constable Andy Jehan, who introduced the proposal to the States Assembly, highlighted the high rate of disposable vape use among young people and raised concerns over environmental impact due to inadequate recycling.

“The rising popularity of single-use vapes has led to increased waste, with these devices being disposed of in ways that create significant environmental issues,” Jehan stated. “Each device’s combination of plastics, metals, and lithium batteries contradicts Jersey’s goals of reducing waste, maximizing resources, and fostering a circular economy.”

This proposal aligns with similar legislation being considered in the UK and recently adopted in Guernsey, where selling disposable vapes will soon become a criminal offense. The States Assembly is set to debate the proposal as early as December 10.
