A new law has been enacted in Jersey making it illegal to carry any weapon in public or on school premises without a valid reason.
Previously, carrying a bladed or sharply pointed object on school grounds was not prohibited, and prosecutors in public settings had to prove intent to harm. Sgt David Bowler described the legislation as a proactive measure to safeguard young people and the wider community. "I also encourage parents to have conversations with their children about this important issue," he added.
Jersey's police force will collaborate with the Jersey Youth Service, schools, and utilize the Building A Safer Community (BASC) framework to engage with young people, raise awareness, and dispel myths about carrying weapons.
