A new exercise program in Jersey is offering childcare support to help new mothers stay active. The Mum to 5km initiative, funded by Jersey Sport, aims to assist women in getting back into fitness after giving birth by providing childcare so they can focus on their training.
Participant Lisa Williamson described the 12-week program as a "game-changer" for her. The program was developed in partnership with the running club Rock and Road Runners and Jersey CrossFit Gym.
Williamson explained that finding a place to exercise after having her baby had been challenging. "The biggest barrier for mums is the anxiety about going to a gym, but training in a group has been incredible," she said, calling the program a "safe and supportive environment."
Program founder Sarah Hickling, who has over a decade of experience in the fitness industry, said running had been a crucial source of support for her after having two children. However, she noticed a lack of places where mothers could exercise with their children.
Thanks to funding from Jersey Sport, Hickling confirmed that three more similar projects are planned, extending the program through to 2026. David Kennedy from Jersey Sport praised the initiative’s success, highlighting that the funding application was strong "because everyone understands how challenging life can become for new parents."
