Electric car scheme set to end by year’s close

Jersey's Electric Vehicle Purchase Incentive (EVPI) scheme, which supports residents in buying electric cars, is expected to close to new applications before the end of the year. Launched in August 2023, the scheme has approved over 900 applications, offering islanders up to £3,500 towards the purchase of new or used electric cars or vans.

The Government of Jersey stated that the remaining funds would be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis and confirmed there are no plans to relaunch the scheme once it closes. The funding for this initiative comes from Jersey's "carbon neutral roadmap" and is designed to reduce emissions from road transport.

While the EVPI will soon close, the Electric Vehicle Charger Incentive, offering £350 towards the cost of a smart charger, will remain available. Additionally, a separate scheme for businesses purchasing second-hand electric vans will continue until all 25 available incentives are allocated.

Deputy Steve Luce, Minister for the Environment, expressed satisfaction with the strong demand for electric vehicles since the scheme’s launch, highlighting that many islanders have benefited from the grants. He encouraged those considering switching to electric vehicles to apply while funds remain.

In 2023, Jersey had 2,993 hybrid vehicles and 2,453 fully electric vehicles registered, out of a total of 127,911 vehicles. The government also noted that Jersey has a higher rate of cars and vans per household (1.53) compared to England's average of 1.24.
