Drivers urged to 'show compassion' and follow cat law

Cat owners in Jersey are urging drivers to follow the law and report if they hit a cat. In October 2021, the island's Road Traffic Law was amended, making it an offence not to stop and report an accident involving a cat, with fines of up to £10,000 for failing to do so.

Despite this, many incidents go unreported. Athena Marie Kallias, who lost her cat Baby, and Julie Larkin, who started the "Lionel's Legacy" campaign after losing her cat, emphasize the emotional toll of these incidents. Vets urge drivers to report accidents, as many cats could survive with timely help.

However, some cat owners claim the law is not being adequately enforced.
