£100k allocated to children's sports programs in new initiative

Eight primary schools and eight sports organisations will receive a share of £100,000 to promote sustained engagement in sports and physical activity for children. Jersey Sport has launched two initiatives, "Sportin Schools" and "Sportin Sport," with £50,000 allocated to each program. The goal is to improve children's access to local sports and strengthen community ties.

Elliot Powell, Head of Sport and Physical Activity at Jersey Sport, explained, "We aim to remove barriers like cost and location to make sports accessible for all young people, regardless of their background."

The funding will be used for paid coaching, purchasing additional equipment, and reducing financial barriers to participation. The programs will run across three school terms, starting in November.

The participating primary schools are Grands Vaux, La Moye, Mont à L’Abbé, St John, Grouville, Mont Nicolle, Trinity, and St Saviour.

The eight sports included are:

  • Netball (Jersey Netball Association)

  • Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (Gracie Barra CI)

  • Padel (Padel for All)

  • Kickboxing (Samurai Kickboxing)

  • Squash (Jersey Squash and Racketball Association)

  • Softball (Jersey Softball Association)

  • Cricket (Jersey Cricket)

  • Rugby (Jersey Rugby Football Club)

Mr. Powell expressed gratitude to the Government of Jersey for supporting the program's development and hopes to expand it in the future with increased funding.
